Memorial Day is a special and significant day for Americans and our Allies. Each year we take time out of our daily lives to reflect on those who have sacrificed so much for so many,

and perhaps now more than ever we need to remember those sacrifices, which changed the course of our shared history. This year we are marking several milestones in U.S. and European military history including the 70th Anniversary of D-Day in June and the centennial observations of World War I.

This year I had the honor of speaking at the Flanders Field Cemetery in Waregem, Belgium. The ceremony reminded me, and all who were there, of the scale of human sacrifice that characterized World War I — a war that in many ways set the stage for the major conflicts of the 20th century. We remain indebted to all the heroes who not only made history, but selflessly forged the future for all mankind. They made the supreme sacrifice for us; we repay them by ensuring their memory never dies and our collective history is never forgotten. They were brothers in arms, we are brothers in memory.
